WEB Walsh: Tracing His Indigenous and Māori Ancestry

From Southport to the NRL

WEB Walsh, a rising star in the National Rugby League (NRL), boasts a unique cultural heritage. Born on July 10, 2002, in Southport, Queensland, Australia, he is the son of Rodney Walsh, an Indigenous Australian from the Gold Coast, and Ke-arn Campbell Walsh, a Māori from Hastings, New Zealand.

Indigenous and Māori Roots

Walsh's paternal lineage traces back to the Indigenous peoples of Australia, while his Māori heritage stems from his mother's New Zealand roots. As a result, he identifies with both Indigenous and Māori cultures.

On his father's side, Walsh is half-Indigenous, with ties to the Indigenous community on the Gold Coast. His mother's Māori ancestry connects him to the iwi (tribe) of Hastings, New Zealand.

A Special Connection to the Gold Coast

Despite his Māori heritage, Walsh considers the Gold Coast his birthplace and home. He grew up in Southport, a suburb of the Gold Coast, and has a deep connection to the region.

The Gold Coast holds a special place in Walsh's heart, not only because it's where he was born but also because it represents the diverse cultural heritage he embodies.
