Veterans and dignitaries pay tribute to fallen soldiers

Event marks potential final major commemoration with surviving veterans

PARIS, May 31 (Reuters) - World leaders and veterans gathered in Normandy, France, on Thursday to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings, honoring the sacrifices of those who fought in the pivotal World War II battle.

British King Charles III, speaking to a D-Day veteran at a commemoration event, acknowledged the dwindling number of survivors and reflected on the significance of the day. "This may be the last major commemoration involving many who served," organizers and government officials conceded.

The ceremony, held at a tent where tea and coffee were served, included speeches and musical performances. President Emmanuel Macron of France and other world leaders paid tribute to the veterans present, thanking them for their service and acknowledging the immense impact of the battle.

The D-Day landings, which took place on June 6, 1944, marcó a turning point in the war. The massive amphibious operation, involving over 150,000 Allied troops, ultimately led to the liberation of France from Nazi occupation.
